Doctors for Mozambique wants to actively inform its sponsors, stakeholders and interested parties about the ins and outs of the foundation. One of the ways we do this is by means of a digital newsletter, which appears several times a year. We have limited the news to one page; more news can always be found on our site www.doctorsformozambique.eu.

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 31 SPRING 2022

Five new students

From Thursday 10 February to Sunday 13 February, we were finally able to hold another selection. Covid-19 made this impossible for a while. Twelve candidates have been invited. The best four among them, who meet all the criteria, will be offered a scholarship to study medicine. During our (Gitta and Harrie) stay in November 2021 we worked hard to prepare for the selection. For the first time, our graduating doctors were called in to be monitors. This was very special for them because in the past they themselves had been selected in this way. Together, we selected and invited candidates, adjusted the program, visited the training center and made reservations. All necessary tests and result forms were printed out in multiple copies and kept in a waterproof box. Not a superfluous luxury in a house where the roof is still leaking. Unfortunately, we ourselves could not be present due to travel restrictions by Omikron. This meant that the mentors were now on their own. Of course, we remained available in the background via WhatsApp for any unforeseen circumstances.

The selection of the new students went very well. Twelve candidates, from the inlands of Mozambique, were present on time. The program went according to schedule and on Sunday all the results were known. Suddenly my phone (Gitta) was ringing red. They had a big problem. The moment of the final decision had come, but the candidates in fourth and fifth place had the same number of points. How to choose? Presenting this to us, they immediately suggested an alternative: would it be possible to give all five of them a scholarship? After calculating feverishly, we immediately decided that it should be possible to offer one more candidate this great opportunity. Immediately, cheers were heard.
So now we have two new girls and three new boys in our program. They have already started their preparatory year.
Apesmo, our daughter association, has done a fantastic job. They immediately took the selected girls under their wing, provided them with accommodation, issued a certificate of exemption from military service, registered them with the faculty, opened a bank account with them, and transferred monthly funds. We are very proud that Apesmo in Mozambique is taking over more and more tasks from the Dutch Doctors for Mozambique Foundation to our complete satisfaction.
